Should one of these players be sitting in your vicinity, assure them that you are not their Round 1 opponent, and that you would be happy to make sure that their decklist doesn’t violate any rules. This will be your first opportunity to brandish your mighty Sword of Etiquette. They’ll be the ones pulling out their playmats and dice, pausing, then asking whether the person across from them is also their Round 1 opponent. This is where scrubs who haven’t played in a competitive tournament before will signal as such. Tournaments typically begin with what is called a “Players’ Meeting.” While these meetings may seem like time-wasting affairs where judges make announcements and collect decklists, both of which could easily be done at the beginning of Round 1, they actually play an important role in signaling.
